The Cockateals were hammered 8-2 by the Balding Eagles. Gary Hughes tallied five points and was supported by Paul Garde, the top goalie of the night, as the ‘maroons’ took over second place.
TERRADACTYLS 6-ICE HAWKS 3
The lowly Ice Hawks called up some recruits to bolster the roster with firepower. Taking the lead and holding it through the halfway point against the Terradactyls is an accomplishment itself. Paul Speck (2g) opened scoring on a tape to tape pass from Brad Stronach. Shortly after that, Terry Thompson (2a) and Ronnie Sampson combined to set up Speck for his second, to retake the lead.
The tide shifted and, finding themselves down by a couple, sub John Crake (1g) scored from Dan Weaver and Rob Poleyko to get back within one with nine minutes remaining. Sub goalie Vanni DiMarco was awesome through the first 30 minutes until the levy broke and a five goal tsunami washed hope away.
The terror of the Terradactyls was not apparent until late in the second half. Bill Winkels had been the only one to score and they actually fell behind. He was set up by Jim Rogers and Joe Palumbo.
Nick Rotundo (2g, 1a) scored his first from Craig Wallace (2a) to tie the game early in the second. Joe Palumbo (1g, 1a) and Rotundo each scored to shift the momentum in their favour.
Bill Sztorc (2g) added a couple more later to prove once again who is the number one team in the Chris Richie Oldies League. Assists went to Charlie Butler (2a) on both. Dennis Chreptyk held the Hawks to three.
BALDING EAGLES 8 -COCKATEALS 2
The Balding Eagles bested the Cockateals 8-2. Brad Speirs slid in to fire a loose puck over a prostrate goalie and into the net after John Humphreys knocked it loose. Art Bevis played as a reserve and had a few moments of past glory recall. One resulted in goal while working with Randy Freitag.
Balding Eagles’ Gary Hughes led with (1g, 4a) He set up Gary Venneman, for his first of the season. But three others were recipients of his beneficence. Jim Dunbar (1g, 2a), Jeff Boyles (2g, 2a) and Steve Rutherford (2g, 1a) all converted Hughes plays into goals. Bobby Wells (1g, 2a) had the legs going and got into the flow for his fourth of the year. Steve Rutherford (2g, 1a) was left alone on the left wing twice and scored to become sixth in team scoring. Assists went to Al Livingston (2a), Ace Venturo and Luch Pinarello (2a).
