Keeping your family, your property and your community safe is the Ontario Provincial Police’s top priority as they continue to address the nagging problem of thefts from motor vehicles.
Local officers along with Caledon OPP Auxiliaries, members of the Policing Advisory Council of Caledon (PACC) and Caledon Citizens on Patrol (CCOP) will go door-to-door in Caledon East this Saturday to talk with residents about an ongoing problem in the Town of Caledon – theft.
Caledon OPP officers investigated approximately 30 incidents of theft during the month of February, including theft from vehicles and homes.
Many of these incidents occurred in and around the Caledon East area and most involved vehicles that were left unlocked with valuable items in plain view, according to Media Relations officer Jonathan Beckett.
By speaking with residents and providing materials on how to keep your belongings safe, local authorities hope the community will get involved in helping reduce these types of crimes of opportunity.
“Keep an eye on each other’s properties, let us know if there’s anything suspicious happening in your neighbourhood,” urged Beckett.
A similar door knocking campaign was held in Bolton last fall that was very well received by residents who were visited, and Beckett is hoping this weekend’s initiative goes just as smoothly.
“This particular type of thief is unsophisticated, opportunistic and in most cases between 12 and 19 years of age,” noted Detachment Commander Inspector Rose DiMarco. “The police can patrol, arrest and charge but the key to success lies in prevention. The good news is these preventative steps are basic and cost nothing. By working together we make Caledon an even safer place to live and work.”
